St. Mark Ladies Aid Meeting – October 27, 2010

St. Mark Ladies Aid met 7:00 P.M., Wednesday, October 27, 2010.  Ten members were present.

Pastor asked President Michele Wiederich to read the evening devotion in his absence.  The message was taken from the booklet “Beside Quiet Waters” and focused on 1 Corinthians 13:11.

Hostesses for the evening were Jean Jurgenson and Marlene Albrecht.  President Michele Wiederich called the meeting to order.  An agenda for the meeting and minutes of the September 29 meeting were handed out.   Attendance was taken.  Gwen Tjernagel was welcomed as a new member.  The minutes were approved as written.  The treasurer’s report by Jean Jurgenson was also approved.  She reported a balance of $308.14.  A thank you card was read from Clarice Fastenau (treasurer for LWMS) thanking our LWMS for the $100 gift.

Committee reports were given.  No funerals were reported.  Marcy reports the kitchen as being adequately stocked.  She and her husband were thanked for keeping the kitchen clean as well.   Marcy reported visits were made to Char, Tony and Mabel.  She said Mabel appreciated the small party that was given for her on her 96th birthday.  Marti reported on the LWMS Fall Rally held on October 2, and gave thanks to all who helped to make it a success.  A recap of the MLC Ladies’ Auxiliary was given.  Michele, Gwen, Judy and Ruth attended the October 13 event this year at the college in New Ulm.  Light of Faith update on “Advent by Candlelight” was given by Gwen.  The event is scheduled for Saturday, December 4.

New 2 You is doing well.  Volunteers are needed the 2nd Saturday of each month (10:00-12:00 or 12:30-3:00).

Christmas Gifts for shut-ins and called workers were discussed.  Marcy and Jean have volunteered to get the gifts.

Arrangements were discussed for November 7 Mission Festival potluck dinner, and the November 14 Fall Harvest and Bake Sale.

The next meeting will be held November 17.  Hostesses will be Jane Siverly and Val Holzhueter.

The meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,

Ruth Schwertfeger, Secretary

Light of Faith

Light of Faith's Purpose

St.. Mark Lutheran Church has been blessed with many faithful, friendly, and talented members. Our members have an opportunity to serve our gracious Lord through Light of Faith.

Light of Faith is a committee formed by members of St. Mark Lutheran Church. The mission of this group is to encourage members of all ages to serve the Lord at planned events and programs for our church and school. The Lord says in I Thessalonians 5:11, Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. We can follow these words by encouraging one another to serve at St. Mark Lutheran Church with a happy and willing heart!

It is our prayer that the Holy Spirit continues to light faith in the heart of each member and that the fruit of our faith will help revitalize and benefit our church and school.

All members are encouraged and welcome to attend monthly Light of Faith meetings. These meetings will be held on the second Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. We look forward to faithfully working with other church organizations. Together we can serve St. Mark’s Lutheran Church and ultimately, the Lord!

Light of Faith held our most recent meeting at Mexican Village at 6:30 pm on 8/10/10.  The meeting was attended by Karly Kock, Kate Sexton, Gwen Tjernagel, Jerry Tjernagel, Jenna Schumann, and Marcy Timmerman.

  1. Prayer  We opened our meeting with prayer.
  2. Treasurer's Report  LOF Treasure Report

    Beginning Balance ……………………………………………………. $120.00
Send check to Laura for reimburse for books ($26.81)
    Ending balance……..……………………………………………… $93.00
  3. Old Business
    • School Cleaning  Seemed to go well.  We had good participation from families from both churches.  The lists of cleaning tasks on each door and in hallway seemed to work well -- people crossed off tasks that they completed.  It also worked well to request that people bring their own cleaning supplies.  We can plan to propose the idea again next year through the PTF organization.
    • School Maintenance  We need to follow up with the teachers and trustees to find out if there are any issues.  We realize that LOF or PTF members do not need to be the middle-men in that line of communication.  Jenna will contact Stan Wills and ask that he and the trustees come up with a "plan of action" for working with the teachers when maintenance issues arise in the school.
    • School Painting  Thank you to Jerry Tjernagel for heading up this project.  Thank you also to Jerry and everyone else who put in time with the prepping and painting!  The rooms and the hallway look great!  Jerry is submitting a bill for approximately $300 to the Risen Savior School Board for reimbursement.  We will see what happens from there, but may be able to ask for a special door collection to help cover the costs of paint and supplies.
    • "Signing Day" for Risen Savior  Gwen will talk to Marti about ideas.  We will try to move the sign listing items available for monetary donations to the school during registration, and we will combine the lists between the two schools and make the list available at the Risen Savior Sunday outdoor service and picnic.
    • Ice Cream Social  This event also went well.  It was nice to have everything set up near the playground.  This provided shade and gave kids a place to play near parents, so everyone could stay together.  Everyone also enjoyed the face painting.  We think the timing was good (Sunday night right before VBS).  Should probably ask for free-will offering next time.  Next time we would like to advertise more.  We could put something in paper, put up "garage sale" type signs, a banner on the fence, balloons, etc.
  4. New Business
    • New Member Welcome  We are proposing Sept. 26 as the date for a pot-luck to be held immediately after church.  Jerry will ask Council to approve date and logistics (would like to cancel Sunday School and Bible Study that morning).  Kate has agreed to be the point-person for organizing this event.  Gwen will get a list of all new members and their addresses and work with Kate on invitations.  When announcing pot luck in the bulletin, we will include alphabetical suggestions for the dish that a family should bring.  We would like to have simple (mailing label) nametags for all those present at the pot-luck.  Kate will ask Pastor and Mike Schwertfeger about the availability of directories for new members.  Marcy will talk to Ladies Aid about supplying paper products and making coffee.
  5. Upcoming Events/Activities
    • Fall Festival  Remember the left-over VBS crafts as activity options for Fall Festival.  At the Sept. LOF meeting, we will pick a date and talk about details for the Fall Festival.  In the meantime, everyone can check calendars and think of suggestions.
    • Advent by Candlelight  We agree that we would like to have our 3rd annual ABC.  The proposed date is Saturday, December 4th (in the evening).  We plan to set an attendance limit and like the idea of using tickets to keep track of this.  Gwen has agreed to lead this event.  We would like to discuss program/script options by email and decide on one to use before our Sept. LOF meeting.  This will allow us to start the planning at that meeting.  Also we plan to ask Lila to consider taking on the task of decorating again, and this will enable us to let her know a "theme" sooner rather than later.
    • Playdates
  6. Next Light of Faith Evening Meeting -- September 14, 2010 at 7:30 PM in St. Mark's basement (following Women's Bible Study)
